We Are All Leaders

BSC Meeting Recap – 18 June 2019

Greetings and Selamat Hari Raya, Toastmasters, friends, and our loyal readers!

“How do you know if you’re a Toastmasters for too long? When you use vocal variety in your sleep!” – our Toastmaster of the Evening, TM Haryati Abd Ghafur, opened the night’s meeting with an inside joke.

During her thought of the day, TM Haryati continued to inspire us by sharing a quote from Amelia Earheart, “The most efficient way to do it, is to do it!”

The Word of the Day, ‘efficacious’, is an adjective that means having a desired result or effect. Thank you, TM Sharon Lim, the Grammarian, for expanding our vocabulary.

Ida Mahmud, IP1, shared her experience leading a team in her Innovative Planning Pathway Project No. 2, “Understanding Your Leadership Style”, with the speech titled “Lead or Retreat”. Boss and leader, are they the same? A boss is arrogant and stubborn. He demands everyone to follow what he says. On the other hand, a leader influences a team to build better connection and self-esteem among members. Through the story of a young boy named Arif, Ida brought us through the transformation and realization of the boy from a boss to a leader. Thank you, Ida, for sharing with us that true leadership comes from our hearts.

Rahmat Tarsat, CC, CL led the Table Topics session with interesting topics about Hari Raya traditions – keep it or leave it?

“Giving green packet to young children, keep it or leave it?” Kelvin said keep it! According to him, green packets act as rewards for children for behaving well when following their parents visiting Raya houses.

“Visiting houses unannounced, keep it or leave it?” Salih said leave it! This is because visiting houses unannounced will trouble the hosts and does not help in fostering relationship between two parties.

“Unhealthy menu during open houses, keep it or leave it?” Rano said keep it! This is because he could only binge eat during Raya season which happens once a year. As long as one controls and eats in moderation, there is no harm.

“Visiting houses until late at night, keep it or leave it?” Hazwan said keep it! This is because Hari Raya is about getting in touch with family and friends. Although exhausting, but once we’re able to reconnect and catch up with people whom we have not met in a long time, the extra effort is worth it.

“Family outfit, keep it or leave it?” Our guest and previous member, Seng Yee, said keep it! This is because wearing the same outfits could be fun and build relationship with others. It will also motivate you to lose weight to look good!

“Asking the when [are you getting married?] question, keep it or leave it?” Hal said keep it! This shows that the person who asks you that question wants greater insights into your life. At the same time, you could use this chance to ask him counter “intimate” questions like “how much do you have in your bank account?”

Congratulations to Hal, for winning ‘Best Table Topics Speaker’ title. His table topics speech was well-structured and hilarious. Great job and keep up the good work.

A special thank you to all the role players who made the meeting a successful one: TM Haryati Abd Ghafur (Toastmaster of the Evening), Rahmat Tarsat, CC, CL (Table Topics Master), Allen Ang, DTM (Table Topics Evaluator), TM Sharon Lim (Grammarian), TM Syahnur Nizam (Ah Counter and ‘Who said what?’), Syatrah Roslan, SR3 (Timer & Tip), Reuben Chin, ACG, ALB (Prepared Speech Evaluator) and Aziman Nasir, ACB, ALB (General Evaluator).

Our incoming VPE, Lai Ling Ling, PM4, presented a workshop on how to navigate pathway during AOB. This workshop has definitely provided a great insight to members and allow them to make full use of the resources available to them on Toastmasters International’s websites.

Closing remarks were done by our VPPR, Syatrah Roslan, SR3 and our VPE, Rahmat Tarsat, CC, CL. Both expressed their gratitude to the support given to them by all members when things become challenging. Together with the members, they have learned and grown as leaders, and achieved things that they didn’t think they could achieve. Syatrah and Rahmat, thank you for what you have done for the club.

Everyone has a potential to become a great leader; one just needs to explore the inner leadership in us and bring it out.

I wish everyone Selamat Hari Raya!
