Grit. It’s messy, exhausting, but necessary for success. “Grit is stamina.. Grit is sticking to your future, day in day out, not just for the weeks, not just for the months but for the years.. Grit is living life like a marathon, not a sprint.”

A gritty message by the ever-motivated Heidi. When she is our Toastmaster of the Evening, Heidi is fully dedicated to get the best out of us. She exemplifies grit in leadership.

Speaking of grit, our speaker tonight demonstrates all the grit qualities for success. Dalton shared a motivating speech entitled, ‘Face Everything’. He was clueless at university, and just took his time then for granted. He essentially saw no point to being there. Over the years of networking with business professionals locally and internationally though by chance, Dalton has come to realize the true value of education. It shapes his life, and all our lives. In education, we are in what is dubbed the, ‘Third Education Revolution’. We are in an era of continuous life-long learning to survive and thrive in today’s world. Learning is no longer restricted to the classroom. We learn online, we learn by networking, and we learn by throwing ourselves on the frontiers of our economies. This is what Dalton strives to do day in and day out, always hustling. With grit, any one of us can succeed in today’s world. There is no challenge that will defeat us as the strongest are those who create positivity in their darkest days. Truly inspiring, Dalton!

Speaking of grit, our speaker tonight demonstrates all the grit qualities for success. Dalton shared a motivating speech entitled, ‘Face Everything’. He was clueless at university, and just took his time then for granted. He essentially saw no point to being there. I disagree as slacking in university was amongst the best memories I had. Over the years of networking with business professionals locally and internationally though by chance, Dalton has come to realize the true value of education. It shapes his life, and all our lives. We learn online, we learn by networking, and we learn by throwing ourselves on the frontiers of our economies. Only real life experiences can teach us success! Plus it’s cheaper to learn this way than signing up for expensive tuition. With grit, any one of us can succeed in today’s world. There is no challenge that will defeat us! Unless that challenge is a dragon.

Pooja shared how she went about in moving to Brunei. Firstly after moving to Brunei, she had so much free time on her hands. This finally gave her the chance to pursue all the hobbies she wanted. She joined dance classes here and such a joy it is to be the tallest amongst 5-year-olds!

Pooja shared how she went about in moving to Brunei. Firstly after moving to Brunei, she had so much free time on her hands. We in Brunei are an easy-going bunch. As we say here, “Chill la, bro.” Having time on her hands finally gave her the chance to pursue all the hobbies she wanted. She joined dance classes here and such a joy it is to be the tallest amongst 5-year-olds! Achievement unlocked, Pooja.

Tzzy Wei had dating advice for us. It’s hard to really know people, particularly the people you date. You always have to keep your guard up. You never know how people could hurt you. Bottom line, don’t trust and don’t date.

Our guest Anwar shared practical tips on buying a guitar. There are three essential rules to follow. First is if you are a beginner, buy a second hand guitar first to learn. Second is if you want to go pro, learn from a tutor. Lastly if you want to impress your girlfriend, buy an expensive guitar.

It was challenging for Jonathan to advise us on maintaining our weights. He himself struggles to gain weight consistently weighing between 54 and 55 kilograms. He supposes we could all just go to the gym, exercise, get a trainer, and stick to these routines.  He is clueless; losing and maintaining weight has never been on his mind!

To be young and have a quick metabolism again.. curse you youngsters.

Congratulations, Pooja on being voted best Table Topics speaker!

Rano evaluated our inspiring speaker Dalton and highlighted what techniques we can all remember in our own inspiring speeches. Always have a clear and focused direction in our speeches. When the direction is clear, inspiration is easily achieved.

Our Table Topics Evaluator Awfa highlighted how our, ‘Advice Column’ contributors can continue giving advice to others; when in doubt, just fake confidence!

Simplicity is the best according to our Grammarian Ida. Fancy language may flabbergast our audience but at the end of the day, a simple message is a memorable message.

Ah Counter and Who Said What Jidun performed his duties as expected, competent and reminded us when crutches can easily appear in our speeches. Tonight, they appeared when we have tendencies to rush our speeches. Take a breath and chill, folks in speech.

Timer Supatra diligently performed her duties reminding us how we manage time in our speeches and gently reminded us to focus our efforts in sticking to our allotted times. Ending speeches and meetings on time is important and it is easily within our control.

It was delightful seeing Syatrah lead our evaluation sessions with poise, grace, and encouraging reinforcements. All our members will do well when they focus on enjoying their time on stage and speak sincerely. As Syatrah says, “you continue being you.”

Tonight was an inspiring meeting with plenty of reminders on grit and success. Our President Pooja wrapped up nicely sharing a quote by one of the all-time boxing greats; Muhammad Ali. “I don't count my sit-ups; I only start counting when it starts hurting because they’re the only ones that count.”

“I don't count my sit-ups; I only start counting when it starts hurting because they’re the only ones that count.” Does this mean we should start counting our speeches when they hurt to deliver?

Cheers,
Hazwan
