President Installation Message

06 August 2017

The Brunei Speakers’ Club happened to me, two and a half years ago, when I fortuitously stumbled upon the BSC website and I visited the club the following week.

It has been two years since and I haven’t looked back. In these years, I have witnessed self-development and personal excellence.

Winning the District level Evaluations has taught me the power of focus and listening. Winning Division level in Table Topics has taught the value of clarity and harmony in conflict. Contests in general have taught me to respect other's time and value my time.

In Brunei, we have two advantages:

  1. Time - to invest in self-development;
  2. People - who form support groups and help each other in peer-to-peer learning.

The support we have is not just from BSC within, but also from the fellowship and camaraderie from other clubs in Brunei – Brunei Advanced Speakers Club, Otters TMC and UBD Toastmasters Club.

BSC is not just a speakers’ club. BSC is an emotion that thrives in the hearts of Brunei Toastmasters. Established in the year 2000, BSC is the mother club – a trail blazer in the history of Brunei Toastmasters. BSC has a strong legacy, a long legacy of nurturing speakers and leaders.

I am honored to be elected as the President of this beautiful club and I have my vibrant band of Executive Committee members:

Vice President Education – Rano Iskandar; Vice President Membership – Jidun Dollah; Vice President Public Relations – Mei Ann Lim; Secretary – Hjh Haryati Gafur; Seargent at Arms – Awfa Nawawi.

We have drawn a trajectory for the term 2017-2018. We have set the vision for the term – Excellence!

"To foster member excellence for the development of compelling Toastmasters at BSC."

I urge all Toastmaster members to utilize the tools available at your disposal, learn the tricks of the trade, and invest your time in self-development and personal excellence.

I will leave you with a wise proverb that I came across:

"Toastmasters does not make you what you want to be. Toastmasters reveals what you are meant to be".

Thank You.

Installation of new BSC, Otters, UBD TMC

On: 4 September 2017

In: Borneo Bulletin > National

IT WAS an important and meaningful day for the Brunei Speakers’ Club of Toastmasters Area K6, District 87.

The Brunei Speakers’ Clubs (BSC), joined by Otters TMC and UBD Toastmasters Club (UBD TMC), recently held their Joint Installation Ceremony at the Star Lodge Hotel in Jerudong, said a press release.

The ceremony instated a brand new Executive Committee (ExCo) of club officers for the term 2017/2018.

Their role is to provide leadership and support, thereby foster a positive environment conducive to each member’s personal and professional growth, allowing members to achieve their Toastmasters education programme goals in communication and leadership.

The event commenced with welcoming remarks by Area Director, Amram Jamaluddin, who also continued the ceremony by acting as the installation officer of all three clubs.

Following the Joint Installation Ceremony, and before the installation speeches, Calvinca Poerawinata of Brunei’s Under-18 Gavel Club entertained the audience in her role as the humour mistress.

From left are members Dr Pooja Shivanand, Jordan Yau, Rano Iskandar, Waajidun Ni’Am bin Haji Dollah; Dr Lim Mei Ann, Hajah Haryati binti Haji Abdul Gafur, Ong Yin and Nurawfa binti Haji Nawawi.

Speeches at the event were given by each club’s newly appointed presidents – Dr Pooja Shivanand (BSC), Sandy Tan (Otters TMC) and Liyana binti Sidek (UBD TMC) – to inspire club members and highlight the club’s vision for the upcoming term.

Dr Pooja Shivanand, the most recent District Champion of Speech Evaluation Contest 2016 as well as the Division Champion of Table Topics Speech Contest 2017, emphasised on the theme ‘Excellence’ in her installation speech.

Excellence in providing club service and educational support to BSC members is the mission of the 2017/2018 BSC Executive Committee.

The mission of a Toastmasters club is to provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.

Everyone is welcomed to join Area K6 Toastmasters Club.
