Our everlasting energetic Sergeant-at-Arms, TM Macalister Mak commenced the meeting by welcoming our members and guest. We had only one guest this week, Jason, who happened to be a visiting Toastmasters member from Taiwan. Toastmaster of the Evening, cheerful TM Heidi Rahman, greeted the crowd and introduced the office bearers of the meeting, including TM Hidayati Haris as Table Topics Master, with the theme “How far will you go?”, followed by our Table Topics Evaluator, TM A. Faiz Zailani who would assess the table topics speakers.
As Grammarian, TM Supatra Lee introduced us the word of the day, ‘gratify’. It means to give pleasure or satisfaction. An example she made with the word is “We are gratified by the winner’s achievement”. Throughout the night, we had several usages of the word of the day and it was pretty gratifying.
Rano Iskandar, CC, CL expressed his gratification as he was selected by his own mentee to take up the role of Ah Counter & Who Said What.
Timer & Tip, Amran Jamaluddin, CC, shared his tip of the day – the best way to spend time is to plan it wisely.
Lastly, General Evaluator, Brendan Ti, CC, ALB introduced his role as he would provide constructive and qualitative feedback for the whole meeting.
Before the prepared speeches began, TM Heidi shared her experience on attending a conference abroad recently. She explained that it’s not about being the best, but to be a better person than you are yesterday. Heidi advised us to take up challenge as she feels she has gained more confidence and experience by participating in the conference.
TM Aziman Nasir, did his CC7 Project, ‘Research your Topics’ with the speech title ‘Sleep’. He explained the consequences of having lack of sleep. It can affect our health, daily lifestyle, and diet. He then focused on two effects of lack of sleep, which are impairing our intellectual judgement and weight gain. The causes of lack of sleep primarily are due to our usage of electronics, TV, Tablet, phones before we sleep, as it reduces melatonin, a hormone that helps us fall asleep. Exercise, however, could help us to sleep earlier and longer due to the gradual drop in temperature.
The next prepared speech was delivered by Allen Ang, ACS, ALB, on a project in the Advanced Manual ‘Moral of the Story’, with the title ‘Take that Shot’. As a child, Allen’s dream was to be a NBA Player. During his school years, Allen was excited on being selected to be in the school’s basketball team. Allen didn’t give up. Taking advice from his father, he was to be more patient and work harder. Allen was chosen as the 12th player of the team out of 25 candidates for a tournament in Malaysia. Allen’s team lost, and he kept dreaming about it and kept asking himself, “what if…” Allen concluded that if we want to succeed and achieve our dreams, we need to take action.
President of the Brunei Speaker’s Club, Chris Woo, CC explained the Executive Committee (EXCO) roles for the upcoming AGM meeting. Each role was explained humorously yet emphasizing the importance of each role.
TM Julius Hong was given the topic on his last notes to someone dear to him if something unfortunate were to happen to him. He would send his note to his mother, and its contents would be apologizing on the things he did wrongly and appreciating his mother for all her efforts in raising him.
TM Dalton Lim was given the topic “Who would he spend his time with, should he be stuck in an elevator?” Without any sign of a doubt, it was none other than Reuben Chin. He would enjoy his company as Reuben would always have logical questions and Dalton would answer illogically to entertain each other.
TM Pranika Lama, on the other hand, was asked about one thing that would frighten her as she grows old. She said that she was scared to fulfil the definition of being old when she actually becomes old. Right now, a lot of people have told Pranika that she talks like an old person and has an old soul. Pranika looks very young, but people don’t believe it. Even her friends told her that she is like a mother to them.
Congratulations to Julius Hong for winning the Best Table Topics for this week meeting.
Congratulations Rano for getting the Best Evaluator Ribbon.
