‘Gratitude’ was the resonant thought of the day instilled by our fervent Toastmaster of the evening, Ong Yin, CL. Thank you, Ong Yin, for raising and keeping the energy up throughout the meeting.
As a tip, our timer TM Dalton Lim advocated us to not rush when giving a speech so that our messages can be clearly conveyed to the audience. Thank you, Dalton, for the tip of the day!
Our ardent Grammarian, TM Hilman Omar, instated “meliorate” as the Word of the Day. It means improve, to make better or become better. Thank you, Hilman, for meliorating our list of vocabulary.
The first speaker of the evening, TM Tieng Chwei Peng, attempted her fourth project from the competent communication manual. She shared with us the ‘lessons from Indochina’ where she returned with rewarding life lessons from her recent Vietnam and Cambodia trip. She has learned to be grateful after realizing children in other countries have to haggle for a living whereas in Brunei she complained about her fixed pay check. Because of the living conditions during the travel, she also felt grateful as she was born in a life of privilege here. Through her trip, she also learned frugality where she will live as modestly as possible. Thank you, Peng, for inspiring us with your stories.
Our second speaker, TM Gerald Goh attempted his seventh project – research your topic – with the speech titled ‘Benefits of afternoon naps’. From his detailed research, he shared with us that a regular short 10 to 60 minutes sleep after lunch can boost creative thinking, regulate sleep deprivation, and improve alertness, learning and memory. During nap, our brain tidies up ideas and concepts we were thinking about and learning. It erases less important parts of memories and strengthens areas that we want to remember. Thank you, Gerald, for educating us on a very informative and useful speech.
Our last speaker, Chris Woo, CC, attempted his first advanced manual – interpretive reading – with the speech titled ‘The four puppets’. Chris wowed and engaged the audiences with his extremely well played vocal varieties. The story of Aung, son of a puppet maker, who left home to seek fortune came to life with a quote “we all learned that strength and knowledge must always serve wisdom and goodness. Thank you, Chris, for enlightening us with your speech.
Our Topic Master, Chang Seng Yee, CC, enraptured us with an affluence of “when is the last time you…” questions.
The last time TM Jidun felt grateful was when he travelled to Indonesia alone. He has learnt that not everyone can afford what we can, so we should appreciate all the little things we have.
The last time TM Sharon Ong had no money in her pocket was after she got robbed in Barcelona while she and her mother was struggling with her 7 year-old nephew. From that day onwards, she has vowed to always zipped her bag and be more careful.
The last time Johan Amilin, DTM made someone happy was just few days ago was when he bought a present for his beloved step brother. A present he got from Italy and coincidentally, someone bought the same present for the birthday boy, but a smaller version.
The last time Yvonne travelled out of Borneo was few months ago where she travelled to Guang Zhou. Yvonne was our first time guest and she shared with us how she got to experience different culture and meeting different people. Congratulations, Yvonne, for winning the best Table Topic speech!
The evening was yet another enlightening rendezvous, and moreover, we had a visiting member from Sabah, Johan Amilin, DTM. Thank you for visiting us. To all the respectable speakers, role players and our supportive audiences, thank you too.
