Toastmaster of the evening A’aqil boosted up the energy during the meeting
Greetings and Selamat Hari Raya, Toastmasters, friends, and our loyal readers!
Opening the floor in his smart ‘Cara Melayu’ (a Malay traditional costume), our Toastmaster of the Evening, TM Aa’qiil Ahmad hosted a wonderful meeting full of laughter and inspiration.
As a self-reflection from an incident in which a little boy remembered him from the ‘Poppins’ musical that he participated recently, TM Aa’qiil shared with us his thought of the day, “Instead of trying to be the best in everything, why not try to leave a good impression.”

Time is of the essence at every Toastmasters’ meeting. Pranika Lama, CC, ALB, our ‘Timer and Tip’ of the evening, advised all speakers to stop when their allocated time is up as that will be the greatest favour speakers can do for their audience.
Rahul was baffled that his word of the day was popular
The Word of the Day, ‘baffle’, means to amaze, astound, or confuse. Thank you, TM Rahul Breh, the Grammarian, for adding a new word to our vocabulary.
Aziman persuading audience that gaming is a fun experience
TM Aziman Nasir, one of our newer members, aimed to convince us to play video games in his Competent Communication Project No. 3, ‘Get to the Point’, with the speech titled ‘Video Games: Friend or Foe?” According to TM Aziman, the benefits of playing role-playing games include brain power enhancement, good characters and behaviors development, and most importantly, stress relief. Video games players were convinced that they should continue to play video games, and non-video games players were tempted to try them out. Well done, TM Aziman! We look forward to your future speeches.
Hilman receives a halfway to communicator ribbon
‘How Many Tears?’ Using purposeful body language to emphasize a point, coupled by meaningful facial expressions, TM Hilman Omar shared with us an inspiring speech about Special Education Needs (SEN) in his Competent Communication Project No. 5, ‘Your Body Speaks’. A few examples of children who require SEN are children suffering from Dyslexia, ADHD and autism. According to TM Hilman, SEN is not a problem; our ignorance about SEN is the problem. In fact, many successful people in the world were SEN children when they were young. A well-known example is Albert Einstein who suffered from autism. Thank you, TM Hilman, for a touching and inspiring speech. Keep it up!
TM Lam Vui Ting led the Table Topics session with interesting topics about Hari Raya. Congratulations, TM Ting for doing such a wonderful job as a first-time Table Topics Master.
“Would you play fireworks or watch fireworks being played?” From a person who used to make fireworks using bamboo shoot when he was young, it was unquestionable that TM Amran Jamaluddin loved playing fireworks.
“Do you prefer to custom make Malay costumes or buy them off-the shelf?” TM Supatra Lee shared with us her preferences for different Malay costumes design, and thus, her preferences for custom-made Malay costumes.
“How old is too old for receiving green packets?” Borrowing on the Chinese cultures, Chris Woo, CC, thought that as long as one is not married, he or she can still receive green packets (although he or she might be 70 years old).
“What is your favourite part of Hari Raya?” For TM Macalister Mak, green packets, food, and the company of friends are things that he enjoys the most during a festivity.
Jordan earned his first ever table topics talking about how not to gain during hari raya
TM Jordan Yau impressed us with his knowledge on eating while he answered the question, “How to avoid over-eating while visiting open houses?” The tips are stay away from carbohydrates and drinks, portion out your food, and eat at your own pace. Congratulations, TM Jordan for winning your first-ever ‘Best Table Topics Speaker’ title. Your table topics speech was clear, concise and well-structured. Great job and keep up the good work.

Brunei Speakers’ Club will be holding its Open House at Seameo Voctech next Tuesday (28 July 2015) from 6pm to 7:30pm. There will be plenty of scrumptious food and wonderful Hari Raya music for the evening. There will be no guest fees so please invite your friends to come and have fun with our Toastmasters family.

In his closing remarks, our President, Chris Woo, CC, urged all evaluators to end their evaluations on a positive note as a sign of encouragement.
When we create a positive environment, learning never stops and so is mentoring.
